Time for fall already! We came back from vacation last week, and now we’re back to our regular farm schedule. Cover crops are mowed, soil blocks are started, and now salad has been seeded. It’s already looking great. It certainly is wet and hot out there, but we’ll manage till the cooler weather comes. We have our volunteer hours back in action– Monday and Wednesday 9am-12pm. We usually send our volunteers home with some goodies, so let that be an incentive for us to see your face! Check out the info below to see what we’ll be up to this fall.

THANK YOU for a wonderful season!

Ten-Speed Greens is going on vacation!

bike to marketWe’ve had an amazing Spring season– we first harvested in January and here we are 7 months later with a successful urban farm. We’d like to reiterate how much we appreciate all the help we’ve had and how much the support of family, neighbors and friends has contributed to our success. Seriously couldn’t have done it without the countless hours David Mitchell (Claire’s Dad) spent mowing, edging, and mulching; without the watchful eyes of our neighbors who keep tabs on our unfenced property; all the volunteers who have lent us a hand harvesting, planting, and weeding; the folks who donated to our IndieGogo campaign; and of course the customers who bought our produce. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

FALL 2013

We have a lot of plans for the Fall- email tenspeedgreens@gmail.com for more info!

Putting the farm to bed

Waat? But it’s July! It’s the height of summer! WHY would you tear out the garden??? Well ladies and gentlemen, in Florida the height of summer means everything dies– the tomatoes are melting, the squash has succumbed to powdery mildew, and the arugula is bolting.
IMG_4200

So it’s time to put the garden to bed. That means clearing out most of the beds and planting cover crops. Cover crops are planted with the express purpose of improving the soil, and are not to be eaten.
IMG_4205
This year we’re planting buckwheat and Cream 12 peas, which will provide food for pollinators and fix nitrogen in the soil, respectively. Most importantly, they will both smother weeds while we close up shop for a month.

Want to get some summer volunteer hours AND take home some free tomatoes? Come tear out some tomato plants and you can have whatever you find on the vine.
IMG_4190We’ll be open for volunteers Monday July 8th, 9am-12pm and 5:30pm-7:30pm, Wednesday July 10th, 9am-12pm and 5:30pm-7:30pm, and Saturday July 13th, 9am-2pm. We will be tearing out plants, weeding, mulching, mowing, planting cover crops, and setting up raised bed irrigation. Danielle and Claire are both leaving town mid-July, we’d love to see you before we go!
